In a cabin deep in the Louisiana bayou, scientist Alec Holland and his wife Linda worked on a bio-restorative formula that they hoped would solve the world's food shortage problems. After Alec refused to sell his work, thugs arrived when he was alone, knocked him out, and planted an explosive device in the cabin. Alec woke up just as the bomb exploded. Covered in flames and drenched in the bio-restorative formula, he ran screaming into the swamp. From his burnt corpse arose a creature composed of plant matter, but with the full memories of Alec. For a long time, this Swamp Thing believed that he was Alec Holland, transformed into a monster. The Swamp Thing eventually discovered that he was merely a plant that had mimicked Alec Holland's consciousness, and that Alec had actually died from his injuries.
