Smitty is the foreman of the mining camp in Alberta, Canada where Rose and James flee after the deaths of James' and Dog's fathers. He is a harsh, but fair man, and Rose falls in love with him. They plan to marry, but Rose dies by James' hand before that can happen. James later comes to idolize Smitty.
