Hazel is the daughter of Alana, a member of the winged species native to Landfall, and Marko, a member of the horned species native to Landfall's moon, Wreath. These two species have been locked in intergalactic warfare as long as anyone can recall. Alana fell in love with Marko when she was assigned to guard him in a Wreath prison, and she helped him escape. The pair got married and produced Hazel, who has both wings and horns. To the inhabitants of both Wreath and Landfall, Hazel represents everything they have been warring against for all of their lives, so Alana, Marko, and all of the friends they meet in the course of their travels must help protect Hazel from the dangers of a universe against her.
