Number One Son
from Charlie Chan
- Also known as Barry Chan,Jimmy Chan,Lee Chan
The eldest son of detective Charlie Chan, frequently referred to by his father as "number one son," has different names depending on the work. In the original books, the character is named Henry. In the film *Charlie Chan's Greatest Case* (1933), he is called Oswald. In *Charlie Chan in Paris* (1935), he appears as Lee Chan. In [gcd_link_issue](170476), he is named Jimmy, which creates an inconsistency because Jimmy is his younger brother in the books. This version from the comics may have been confused with the character portrayed by Victor Sen Yung in the 20th Century Fox films. In some comic strips and [gcd_link_series](304) reprints, he appears as Lee Chan. In the television series *The New Adventures of Charlie Chan* and in the tie in comic book published by [gcd_link_publisher](54), he is referred to as Barry Chan, which is the name of another son of Charlie Chan who appears in the newspaper strip as a child. After the license ended, Charlton continued the comic book under the new title [gcd_link_series](1191). In [gcd_link_issue](171760), a pastiche of Charlie Chan named Louie Lou appeared. Louie also refers to his eldest son as Number One Son. An unpublished cover of issue number 10, illustrated by Dan Barry, showed Chan, his children, and the driver Birmingham.
