Penance is the secret identity taken on by Robert "Robbie" Baldwin after he survives an explosion which kills 612 people (including 60 children). Penance wears a custom suit designed like an Iron Maiden with 612 internal spikes representative of the deaths in Stamford, 60 of which pierce the skin (in honor of the children lost in Stamford), so that through the constant pain, he never forgets those who were lost.
