John, Barbara, and Daniel were the children of Barton Blaze and Naomi Kale (alias Clara Blaze). Naomi's ancestor, Noble Kale, had been cursed by Mephisto, such that the first born of each generation would become the Ghost Rider. To protect her infant children, Naomi decided to hide them while she sought ways to stop the curse from affecting her family. She sent Barbara and Danny to be raised by Francis Ketch and her husband, and left her first born, Johnny, with his father. When Barton was later killed in a motorcycle accident, Johnny was raised by Craig "Crash" Simpson and his wife Mona. Naomi succeeded in finding spells to protect Johnny, but she was unaware that the curse would then pass onto her second child, Barbara, and finally onto Danny. One Halloween Eve when they were teenagers, Danny took Barbara to a cemetery to see the grave of Harry Houdini. The siblings stumbled upon criminal activity in the nearby junkyard, and Barbara was shot through the chest with an arrow. Danny carried his critically injured sister to a hidden spot, and there he noticed a motorcycle with a glowing gas cap. Danny touched it with his blood-soaked hand and was instantly transformed into the Ghost Rider.
