In the year 2030 AD, the world was suffering under a 29 year rule by a dictator and former superhero now known as Monarch. Matthew Ryder volunteered for an experiment which transformed him into Waverider, a being able to travel freely through time. He went back to the year 1991 in the hopes of preventing the rise of Monarch. Instead, Waverider witnessed the events in which the hero Hawk was corrupted and became the future despot. Monarch was defeated, and his future timeline was avoided. Waverider was later killed by Extant (formerly Monarch) during the Crisis in Time.
