Sarah Essen became a police officer in the Gotham City Police Department. She fell in love with Commissioner James Gordon but the two were never able to get together for many years until they were finally married in Legends of the Dark Knight Annual (DC, 1991 series) #2 (1992). She briefly took over James' job as commissioner when he tried his hand at politics. During the No Man's Land crossover series she was killed by the Joker.
