Dr. Jan Maarshall was a Swedish electrical engineer who designed the Rakks, robot guardians for a clandestine government laboratory known as the Nest. Following an earthquake that demolished the facility, he and his colleagues underwent a transformation, gaining superhuman abilities and adopting the name the Lords of Light and Darkness. They engaged in battle against the X-Men and Spider-Man before being transported into space. There, they experienced another transformation, becoming an energy state that was seen from Earth as a new star.
