Ak-Var was sentenced to the Phantom Zone for plotting to steal a revered relic called a Sun-Stone from a museum. After he had served his full sentence, Ak-Var was released by Superman in the bottle-city of Kandor, where he became the lab assistant of Superman's cousin, Van-Zee. Ak-Var later married Van-Zee's niece, Thara Gem-Zee.
