Jane Dodge

Rulah the Jungle Goddess

  • Also known as Joan Grayson

Jane Dodge was a bored American woman. She had no home or family, just money and a yen for adventure. As she was flying over the African jungle, she began daydreaming and flew too high, causing her fuel line to become affected by the harsh climate. Her fuel line snaps, and the leaking gas ignites. She is forced to parachute out of the flaming plane. Upon landing, she notices that her clothes are ruined, so she uses the skin of a giraffe killed by the plane crash to make herself a new outfit. She later saves a native tribe from the schemes of a wicked woman named Nurla. They are convinced that she is a goddess, and force her to prove herself by fighting a leopard. When she succeeds in killing the beast, they name her Rulah, after a jungle goddess. More than two years later, a man named Tim Pointer who had been suffering from amnesia is released from a U.S. Army hospital. He sets out to find his girlfriend, Joan Grayson. When he arrives at her home, he is given an old newspaper with the headline "Society aviatrix missing on daring African flight". He is told that she was never found. Tim heads to Africa in an attempt to locate either Joan or her body. He parachutes into the region where she was believed to have been lost. Tim is eventually reunited with Joan, who is now known as Rulah, but he realizes that she has moved on and he heads back home alone. No explanation is given for the name change from Jane Dodge to Joan Grayson. Rather than treat them as two separate characters, it will be assumed that Joan created the Jane Dodge alias for unknown reasons.
