A human woman slept with a man who was really a disguised banished being from the nightmare realm. That union conceived a child, who was slowly killing the mother. Using black magic and rituals, the man prolonged her life long enough for her to give birth. The child, known as Darkchylde, became a doorway between the nightmare realm and Earth. Ariel Chylde, who lost her mother at age 4, grew up having nightmares every night, and she is a senior in high school, moving to a new school with her abusive father, from whom she wishes she could escape. When he comes home from work and starts to abuse her one night, she taps into the darkness of the nightmare realm and transforms into a creature from her nightmares, setting the house on fire and killing her father. Ariel escapes the house and finds safety with Perry, a boy from school who expressed interest in her, and she gets more and more embroiled in the politics of the creatures from the nightmare realm while fighting off the body of her father, now possessed by a creature called Kauldron, who wants to use Darkchylde to bring nightmare realm creatures to Earth in order to rule it.
