With her story beginning near the end of [La Belle Époque](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_%C3%89poque), after the sudden death of her gambler husband, Marquise Nadine of Rambuillet learns that their estate is deeply in debt. With only one year to pay off said debts or lose her residence and lifestyle, she dons a revealing outfit, domino mask, and cape, becoming Candida the Marchesa, a sadistic prostitute who also murders and robs wealthy Parisians.
