Jason was the son of Aeson, the rightful king of Iolcos, and Alcimede. Years after Jason's uncle Pelias overthrew King Aeson, Pelias agreed to allow Jason to take the throne if he succeeded in retrieving the Golden Fleece. Jason assembled the Argonauts, named after their ship "The Argo", and together they went on a quest for the Fleece. After his return, Jason married the sorceress Medea. When Jason later abandoned her for a woman named Glauce, Medea murdered two of their sons, Mermeros and Pheres, and fled to Athens.
