A century in the future, Dr. Michael Grant developed an amazing mutagenic chemical he called Cortexin, which had the effect of physically and mentally evolving animals. It was at this time that the world suffered a global catastrophe referred to as The Great Disaster, which completely devastated the Earth. The Cortexin leaked into the world's water supply, causing animals to evolve and humans to devolve across the globe. One group of humans found shelter in an army bunker in New York City, named Command D. Decades later, only one elderly man and his teen-aged grandson, Kamandi, remained in the bunker. After his grandfather was killed, Kamandi had no choice but to leave the bunker and venture out into the world. It was only then that he discovered that animals now ruled the world, and humans were nothing but savage beasts. Kamandi fears that he has become the last boy on Earth.
