Joan Bernet Toledano

Spanish cartoonist and animator from a family of comic creators. He was the brother of Miguel Bernet ("Jorge"), creator of Doña Urraca, and the uncle of Jordi Bernet, creator of Torpedo 1936. He began his career at Hispano Americana de Ediciones, producing covers and several stories for the Fábula series. He later worked for Marco, Clíper, Toray, De Haro, and, from the late 1950s onward, Bruguera. His work appeared in numerous magazines, including Nicolás, TBO, Tele Color, Super Mortadelo, Gaceta Junior, Din Dan, Super Pulgarcito, and Trinca. For Trinca, he illustrated Los Guerrilleros, written by Andrade. In 1965 he created the TBO character Altamiro de la Cueva, which became popular in Spain and was also published in France and the Netherlands. He also produced a substantial amount of uncredited work, most notably for 13, Rue del Percebe. He drew a total of 64 pages: seven between November and December 1967 while temporarily replacing F. Ibáñez, and another 57 after Ibáñez left the series, continuing until January 1970. Until the mid-1980s, he contributed to magazines including Can Can, El Ruedo, La PZ, Mata Ratos, Pepe Cola, Tio Vivo, and Terror Fantastic. Among his books was the horror parody Franciscostein (1983). He also worked as an animator at Estudios Balet y Blay. In the mid-1970s he settled in Pontons, near Vilafranca del Penedès, where he developed a close connection with the local community and exhibited his artwork on several occasions. He was buried in Pontons.
