Larry Wright

While in the United States Army and stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Wright began to do political cartoons during 1960 for the Okinawa Morning Star, an English-language newspaper which was civilian owned. After his discharge from the Army, Larry joined the Morning Star as a full-time editorial-page cartoonist and night news editor and worked there from 1961 to 1965. In 1965 Wright moved back to Detroit to become an assistant news editor for the newspaper, the Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) and soon was doing political cartoons for the feature page. He continued with the Free Press until 1976. Larry joined the Detroit News (Detroit, Michigan), when he was offered the full time cartoonist position in 1976. In 1995, Wright became the associate creative director of the Detroit News website. He retired from full-time work with the Detroit News in April 2006, but kept on doing free-lance political cartoons three times a week. By 2008, when economic issues for the News caused cut backs, his free-lance work lowered to twice a week and, by 2009, one day a week. Larry retired from editorial cartooning in 2009. Wright also had his editorial cartoons syndicated through Cagle Cartoons, starting in 2001. This also ended with his retirement in 2009. He did the daily and Sunday syndicate comic strip Wright Angles, which was distributed by Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) Syndicate from July 12, 1976 to 1979, then from 1979 until its end on September 23, 1990 by the United Feature Syndicate. Wright also did the daily comic panel and Sunday comic strip, Kit 'N' Carlyle which was distributed by United Media Enterprises through its Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) Syndicate from December 1, 1980 until June 2011. Kit 'N' Carlyle's distribution changed to Universal Uclick in June 2011 and continued with them until he retired from his comic strip on November 7, 2015.
