‘Sempé’ is known for “Le petit Nicolas”, which is written by René Goscinny. It began as a comics feature in “Le Moutique” (1956–1958) and then became a series of illustrated children’s books. The comic was revived in “Pilote” in 1960. The feature is an early example of children’s literature that depicts the actual experiences of children rather than mere instruction in adult-sanctioned behavior. Sempé is also widely known as the artist of full-page cartoons in “Paris Match” and cover of “The New Yorker”.
