Ippongi Bang (Bang Ippongi) began her manga career while a schoolgirl in 1983, with "Bang's Campus Diary" in the cult magazine Fanroad. Later she became known as a flamboyant personality who was involved in bikini modeling, motorbike riding, and dressing as manga characters such as Rumiko Takahashi's Lum. She started a manga collective called "Studio Do-Do," which had several of their works translated and published in the United States in the 1990s by Antarctic Press. Bang, who had previously been an exchange student in the United States, was willing to appear at American comic and anime conventions to promote her work.
