George Alec Effinger

George Alec Effinger was a prolific author of science fiction and fantasy. He attended the first Clarion writing workshop (not to be confused with Clarion West) in 1970 and his professional career began in the 1971 anthology “Clarion”. He wrote occasional comics scripts. Notably, he took over the ‘Gullivar Jones, Warrior of Mars’ feature in “Creatures on the Loose” (Marvel, 1972–1973) from creator Roy Thomas (Tony Isabella wrapped the series up in “Monsters Unleashed”, 1974). He then began adapting Lin Carter’s ‘Thongor, Warrior of Lost Lemuria’ stories, also in “Creatures on the Loose” (Marvel, 1973). That series was completed by Isabella, Gardner Fox, and Steve Gerber. While at Marvel, he also wrote single stories with artists P. Craig Russell, Billy Graham, and Walter Simonson. In the late 1980s, he created the science-fiction series “Neil and Buzz in Space and Time” (Fantagraphics, 1989), of which only one issue was published. Among other awards, Effinger received the Nebula Award from his peers for his novelette “Schrödinger's Kitten” in 1989.
