His time with the papers was paused when he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and eventually served in the Korean War in 1950 where he was wounded in action on May 24, 1951. He then returned to the newspapers after the war and was still there when both papers merged in 1985 to become Saint Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch. By 1986, they were known as Saint Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, and in 1990, just Saint Paul Pioneer Press. His retirement date is unknown. Fearing also did several comic panels/strips related to Minnesota history, local animals, and Saint Paul's politics.
