John William Waterhouse was an English painter known for transitioning from the Academic style to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style, primarily portraying women from Greek mythology and Arthurian legend. Born in Rome to artist parents, he later studied at the Royal Academy of Art Schools in London and exhibited there. His works drew inspiration from classical literature, including Homer, Ovid, Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Keats.
