Barbara Kesel

An American writer and editor of comic books. Her bibliography includes work for CrossGen, Dark Horse, DC, IDW, Image, and Marvel. Kesel initially entered the comics industry as a college student after writing a 10-page letter to editor [Dick Giordano](app://creator/3357) regarding the portrayal of female comic book characters. Giordano offered her a writing job. Her first published comics story was "He with Secrets Fears the Sound...", a Batgirl back-up feature, in [Detective Comics #518 (September 1982)](app://issue/36693) (September 1982). After receiving her college degree in drama studies in 1983, she became an associate editor at DC in 1984, and was promoted to editor the following year. In 1988, she co-wrote, with then-husband [Karl Kesel](app://creator/7541), a The Hawk and the Dove miniseries, followed by an ongoing series that ran from 1989 until 1991. As a solo writer, Kesel scripted the licensed Dungeons & Dragons series [Spelljammer](app://series/14877) in 1990–1991 and an adaptation of the D&D novel trilogy [Avatar](app://series/14727). Kesel became an editor at Dark Horse in 1991 and later was part of Team CGW, responsible for most of the design and creation of the setting and characters in the Golden City location. From 2000 to 2004, Kesel worked as both a writer and an editor at CrossGen, where she scripted the series [Meridian](app://series/9960), [The First](app://series/9963), [Sigil](app://series/9962) and [Solus](app://series/10794) as well as issues of [CrossGen Chronicles](app://series/9965).
