Jean-Charles Andrieu de Levis

Jean-Charles Andrieu de Lévis is a comics researcher, illustrator, and critic of comics and children's books. He began writing about the ninth art at the same time as he began his studies at the Strasbourg Decorative Arts Illustration Workshop (now the Hear). He has published comic strips, drawn for the press, produced illustrated reports, and painted frescoes for various institutions. He has exhibited in various galleries and museums, and draws in public during illustrated concerts. He also holds a doctorate in French language (Sorbonne Paris IV) and his thesis focuses on the aesthetic evolution of comics in France and the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. His work today focuses mainly on contemporary comics in which authors explore new avenues of expression that essentially pass through the materiality of the image. He generally uses concepts borrowed from aesthetics and art history for his analyses. He has notably written the essays Poetics of a Visual Introspection (Brussels, Image(s), 2019) and Ratures et narration syncopée (Brussels, La Cinquième couche, 2021).
