Synopsis
President Jefferson assigns Lewis and Clark to explore and chart America's vast new Louisiana Territory, establish contact with the Indians, and find a route to the Pacific. They make their way there and back, for much of the way depending on Sacagawea as guide and interpreter. They gain great acclaim, and Jefferson appoints Lewis governor of the new territory, but horrendous depression continues to dog him. Alcoholic and severely depressed, he finally commits suicide. Sacagawea remains on the Plains, mostly unrecognized but apparently happy with her life.
