Robert Beerbohm and Doug Wheeler surmise that it was first serialised in the New York Picayune. David Kunzle gives dates of 1852-53, 1870s-1888 for this book. This specific title ("The Extraordinary and Mirth-Provoking Adventures by Sea & Land of Oscar Shanghai") was still advertised by Dick & Fitzgerald in 1862 with the same price.
