Synopsis

In a framing sequence set in a future Earth suffering through a new Ice Age, Aurora, a young girl, looks for fuel to burn for warmth with her brother Sol and sister Luna and their teacher, Pallas. The group finds an abandoned library, and Aurora stays up all night reading about volcanoes, which she feels are the key to their survival. The bulk of the book consists of Aurora explaining volcanoes to her group--how and why and where they form, what the various types are, and how they behave, and their role in the planet's evolution.
