The League of Rats #1

The presentation is a comic book filled with the poetic fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) accompanied by the captioned illustrations, engravings, and sketches of Paul Gustave Doré (1832-1883). This include the engraving, "Belling the Cat," c. 1868 specifically based on La Fontaine's fable, "The Council Held by the Rats." Doré's animal world of rich, dark lines in horror and fantasy sit comfortably next to later works of such illustrators as Charles Vess or Berni Wrightson.
