This variant is sometimes referred to as an "End of an Era" variant due to the cover art being a black and white version of this issue's "End of an Era" variant, also by Jim Cheung.

Retailers received one (1) copy of this exclusive "Final Issue" variant if/when they exchanged it for two (2) ripped off front covers of any unsold copies of "Avengers & X-Men: Axis" (Marvel, 2014 series) #1; as long as that retailer ordered Axis #1 at 250% their orders of "Original Sin" (Marvel, 2014 series) #2.

The cover art that was originally shown to retailers for this variant ended up being the cover art for this issue's "End of an Era" variant; which was an open-order variant. Due to this mistake, Marvel released the following statement:

"Due to an error between AVENGERS #44 CHEUNG END OF AN ERA VARIANT and the AVENGERS #44 CHEUNG FINAL ISSUE EXCHANGE VARIANT, Marvel will be reprinting and shipping the correct cover copies to all retailers that ordered these variants.

"The retailers who participated in the Final Issue variant exchange program will not only be provided the originally qualified for and ordered variant but will also be provided a FREE new additional variant, AVENGERS 44 CHEUNG INKED FINAL ISSUE EXCHANGE PROGRAM VARIANT, in the quantities qualified for under the exchange program."

Retailers received these variants four weeks after the original release date for this issue.
