Synopsis

Shirley meets piano salesman Ben at an amateur drama club. They fall in love, but she is used to a higher standard of living than he can provide. This is curious, because Shirley’s father is just an office supplies salesman. Shirley learns her parents have been living beyond their means, borrowing money (even from Ben) to “keep up appearances.” She leaves home and gets a job as a sales clerk and refuses to see Ben until she can repay him. Ben tracks Shirley down and says they’ll be married and live sensibly on his salary.
