Synopsis
Grace takes a teaching job in a small, conservative mid-Western town. She and local mechanic Frank fall in love, but the mayor and chair of the school board tell her she’ll be fired unless she breaks up with him. Grace asks a friend for advice: her friend says Mr. Anthony suggests “Retreat” – marry Frank and find a nicer town. However, before they can leave, Frank, serving as a volunteer fireman, dies in the line of duty. Grace stays in town to teach, “emphasizing love and tolerance.”
