Synopsis

In a story set in 1818, Lady Devereux tries to arrange a marriage between her daughter and Simon, but Melanie would rather die than marry anyone other than John. Clorinda, Melanie's orphaned cousin who had lived with the Devereux family since Clorinda's mother died, rides out to tell Simon of Melanie's feelings. Simon changes his mind and decides to ask for Clorinda's hand instead, but Lady Devereux does not give up in her hopes of matching Melanie with Simon.
