Weapon X-Force began as a team of mutants originally drawn together by conflict with the covert Weapon X program, a government project that hunted mutants and experimented on them. Initially operating under the name Weapon X, the group coalesced around figures such as Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Domino after surviving attacks and rescuing fellow mutants during an investigation into Weapon X’s operations. They acted as a proactive mutant strike team, confronting threats including a Weapon X-created Wolverine/Hulk hybrid. Eventually, internal shifts in leadership and mission focus prompted the group to redefine itself. Eschewing its original association with the clandestine project, the team adopted the name Weapon X-Force when it began working as independent mercenaries alongside Omega Red, with Mystique arranging contracts and new members like Deadpool and Monet St. Croix joining.
