Synopsis
Superman reads a letter from 12-year-old Tommy Delaney, who is troubled by a friend named Ballser -- a violent bully who tortures and kills animals. Afraid to speak up, Tommy watches Ballser's cruelty escalate until Superman intervenes to save a cat. Inspired by Superman's humility and kindness, Tommy stands up to Ballser, and the truth comes out: Ballser has been killing animals for months. Tommy and his friends confess, Ballser gets help, and the others, driven by a newfound understanding of what it means to be a hero, strive to help by volunteering at a local animal shelter.

Giveaway prepared by DC for the Doris Day Animal Foundation's "Comics for Compassion" program. Robert De Angelis, who served as director of communications for the Doris Day Animal League, a sister organization of the DDAF, and who spearheaded the project, said in an [entry on his blog][blog] that the book's title was based on another an advocacy-themed book published by DC nearly a decade prior, [Superman for Earth #[nn] ([May] 1991)](app://issue/50572). De Angelis said the DDAF commissioned 75,000 copies of Superman for the Animals, 16,000 of which were polybagged by DC in kid-friendly titles including Batman: Gotham Adventures #22 (March 2000), Hourman #12 (March 2000), Impulse #58 (March 2000), Looney Tunes #62 (March 2000), Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #8 (March 2000) and Superman Adventures #41 (March 2000). (This comic's on-sale date is based on earliest released of these issues.) De Angelis said he distributed "the remaining copies to parents, teachers, scout leaders and humane educators across the United States" throughout the following year. The second and final comic produced as part of the DDAF's Comics for Compassion program is X-Men Unlimited #44 (May 2003), which was published in 2003.
